Wearing School Uniforms
In a lot of schools today, the staff are starting to enforce wearing uniforms. Most children do not like the idea of wearing the same clothes as everyone else. In fact, a recent study found that 80% of kids do not like uniforms. However, they do not realize the good effects uniforms have. Enforcing students wear uniforms can be uncomfortable for the kids, but the uniforms do have their benefits.
The main reason students dislike uniforms is because if everyone is wearing the same clothes, it limits the amount of individuality for the children. Students need to be able to express themselves in other ways than just their personality. Alistair Brown, the co-principle of Rochester independent schools in the United Kingdom said, “Students flourish when they’re treated as free-range individuals.” He is saying that when you let kids express themselves through their own personal style, they will have an improved time at school, and improve at meeting new people and expanding their social skills. Some people believe that having to wear the same clothes, could eventually spread to having to use the same backpack or lunch box.
Uniforms can also be fairly expensive. All the different items of clothing cost about $30 each. The top cost about $29.99, the bottoms cost about $34.99-$44.99, the pullovers cost about $39.99, and the vest cost about $35.99. In total an entire uniform costs around $249 depending on what you buy. The cost of the uniforms could make the parents mad about having to spend a lot of money. As well as, if the kid gets the uniform stained or once they grow out of it, the parents are going to have to buy a whole new uniform for their child. Even though the parents spend a good amount of money on regular clothes as well, now the child needs a uniform for school, and clothes for the weekend or vacation. This will cause the parents to spend double the money they would have to if the kids only needed those couple pairs of clothes for school.
Although wearing uniforms have their bad side, there are also a lot of good advantages to wearing a uniform. For instance, if everyone in the school is wearing the same outfit, then kids will no longer judge each other on their clothes, but will really get to know one another. When all the kids get to know one another's personality then everyone will start to feel more included. The French toast official of school wear said, "Its time to eliminate from schools the status and respect many students give to clothing labels and price tags." They are saying that kids pay too much attention to what is on the outside rather than what is on the inside. When all the kids in the school are wearing the same outfit it can help reduce bully and increase student safety. Uniforms have reduced bullying by 64%, and they have increased student safety by 79%. Another reason for schools to enforce uniforms is to help the kids stay focused in class. When the students are not worrying about how they look, or fixing their clothes then they will be more attentive in class.
Lastly, wearing uniforms can also make everyone feel equal. In fact, some areas have a lot of people who cannot afford a lot of clothes to wear to school. For example, Kentucky, Georgia, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Mississippi, and Maryland. Having uniforms in these areas helps everyone feel like they belong. The uniforms will prevent making some people who do not have a ton of money feel poor. The uniforms also helped resist peer pressure by 86%. Students will no longer feel pressured to steal from anyone because if your all wearing the same clothes no one will have to worry about their expensive jacket being stolen. In addition, the uniforms have improved student achievement by 64% because the kids are now paying more attention in class.
In conclusion, school uniforms have their downsides for the students. Like not being able to express themselves, and the uniforms are quite expensive. Even though these downsides can make students dislike wearing uniforms, there are still some upsides to a school uniform. For example, students will feel more equal, and they will no longer judge others by how they look. Wearing uniforms is not a punishment it is simply a requirement some schools have to try and help improve their education.
