Have you ever thought of becoming vegetarian? There are many ways vegetarians benefit over meat eaters. Three ways that people thrive on being vegetarian is that they live healthier lifestyles, help alleviate world hunger, and avoid the unethical treatment of slaughtering animals. The first reason people should become vegetarian is that it is unethical to kill animals for food. Animals are a lot like people, they have feelings and social connections. Scientific studies show that, “cattle, pigs, chickens, and all warm-blooded animals can experience stress, pain, and fear” (Temple Grandin). In the United States alone over 30 million cows, 100 million pigs, and 9 billion birds are slaughtered for food every year. These animals should not have to be killed for an unnecessary diet. The second reason to become vegetarian is to help alleviate world hunger. There are over 900 million people in chronic hunger worldwide. Over ten pounds of plant proteins are used to produce one pound of beef protein. If these plant proteins were fed to humans instead of animals, there would be a significant decrease in world hunger. Studies from Cornell University found that “the grain fed to the US livestock alone could feed over 800 million people worldwide” (Cornell University 2016). Overall if people had a more plant based diet there would be a lot less people lacking the consumption of food. The final reason to become vegetarian is that these kinds of people live longer. Overall, people who eat red meat have a 24% higher chance to die from cardiovascular disease. Also, vegetarians tend to have lower blood pressure and lower chance of having a stroke. The consumption of red meat reduces life expectancy about seven years for men, and about four years for women. As can be seen, avoiding the unethical treatment of slaughtering animals, helping alleviate world hunger, and living a healthy lifestyle can all be achieved by becoming vegetarian. There are numerous undisputable motives to disregard a meat-filled diet. People should consider these reasons and become vegetarian.
