Women should be able to have abortion in the trimester of pregnancy. First of all, it is the women’s choice and it is her right to decide whether she wants to be a mother and she should decide what to do with her body, not anyone else. As Margaret Sanger states, “No women can call herself free who does not control her own body.”
Many would claim that this is murder, but in the first two weeks, the egg is just traveling around the women’s reproductive organs and has not yet started to develop. The baby will not feel pain or go through any terrible death symptoms because it is not a baby yet, it is just an egg that happened to be fertilized or an embryo that has not yet developed body systems to sense and respond to pain. Yes, this egg did have the potential to become a human being, but so did every single egg that died and came out as blood every time a woman has her period. Is it right to arrest a woman (like arresting a women who had an abortion) for having a period and killing that opportunity for a human being instead of being pregnant?
If someone’s beliefs or ethics go against abortion, then those are their opinions and they should not be forced upon others. If a women made a bad choice, yes, that is on her, but if she was raped this is not her fault and she should not have to deal with the consequences of others upon her body.
Often times, the women who are looking for abortions would have a hard time raising a child and therefore, they do not want to have it. The parent(s) could not be able to afford the child, be broken up, be addicts, or need to put the child in an orphanage. This is the obvious and best choice for everyone and it should be remain legal as a choice for women and empowerment over their futures and bodies.
If abortions were to become illegal, it would not decrease the number of abortions. The women who want an abortion in the first place are still going to get one whether it is legal or not. But if they are illegal, they will be even more dangerous and more women will die from abortion accidents. According to the Orlando Women’s Center, “Less than 0.3% of abortion patients experience a complication that requires hospitalization.” If they are not safe and legal like they are today, these rates will drastically increase but the rate of abortions total will not change, so this would be pointless and counter- productive.
Abortion should stay legal because it can sometimes be the best decision, not everyone’s ethics are the same, it is in the earliest stages of developing, and making them illegal would be counter- productive. This is a highly discussed topic but each person’s opinions and situations are different which is why this should remain choice for women and families in the United States during the first trimester of pregnancy.
