Drinking in the Dark?
By: Jason Hofmann
Is alcohol practical in a movie theater that can have up to one hundred people? According to TWC News, governor Cuomo recommended a proposal to allow alcohol to be sold in the movies. He stated, “It is a very big industry for us, we have developed it. It’s going gangbusters, anything we can do to encourage it. It’s especially successful in upstate New York." Wine and other alcohol sale in movie theatres could help tourism. Alcohol could make the movies much more enjoyable for some people. Having the option to enjoy a glass of wine or other alcoholic beverages will increase the positive perspectives of movie theatres and increase the enjoyment. According the CNY Central, drinking would only be allowed in the movies if the movie is pg-13 or higher. Also, only one drink would be allowed to a customer at a time to reduce the chance of drunk customers.
The Argument:
Alcohol can make movies more exiting for some, but the others could be discouraging. To the governor’s point, this proposal could increase tourism in New York, but also discourage it. If alcohol is allowed and people are now drinking in the dark, people are now unpredictable. Who wants to go to the movies when other viewers are drinking and could be drinking too much, but it is in the dark, who could tell? "I have had friends tell me that one of their pastimes is to go to the movie theater," said Jean Downing at the Drug Education Council in Mobile. "It's a very special place and a safe place where there is not alcohol there and it's not part of the experience." This new idea, could ruin the movies.
