Baseball: 90% Standing, 10% Running
By Haley Robinson
Imagine sitting in the stands, looking down on a baseball field. The pitcher is standing on the mound and "seems to be focused." After five minutes, the pitcher finally throws the ball. The batter swings... and misses. Another five minutes passes, and the pitcher is winding up again. Half of the team is standing in the outfield picking daisies, while the other half is lounging in the dugout. You start to wonder why you even went to the game in the first place. How could you enjoy a sport where players stand around for three hours doing almost absolutely nothing? You don’t, it’s impossible. Baseball is a sport of the past, while lacrosse is a sport of the present and the future. According to LaxWorld, 3.4 percent participation increase occurred from the previous year, proving that more athletes are choosing to go the lacrosse route rather than the baseball one. Do you want to be stuck in the past? Probably not. Lacrosse is a combination of multiple sports, such as hockey, basketball, and soccer, and requires finesse, athleticism, coordination and hard work. Admit it, lacrosse is clearly a better sport than baseball because it is much more interesting, requires more physical ability, coordination, motivation and teamwork. How hard is it to sit in a dugout for more than half the game, and occasionally go out onto the field, only to stand around for another hour?
One of the main reasons why lacrosse is better than baseball is that lacrosse is a sport filled with action, while baseball is pretty much standing around and doing nothing. According to CBS Sports, there is about 18 minutes of action in your average MLB game. In a three hour game, you would think that about two and half hours would be spent playing. This is not the case. Can you believe that only 18 minutes in a three hour game are actually spent playing? Although this may seem unreasonable, do not argue with the facts. A stop-watch was taken to three MLB games of varying overall length and found that the average three-hour game includes less than 18 minutes of actual baseball action. Also from CBS Sports, your average MLB game is 90% standing around. This statistic is screaming the word pointless. In lacrosse, there are minimal stoppages. In a one hour game, almost all of the time is spent playing. There is no wasted time, such as time between pitches, wild pitches, strikes, balls, fouls, and extremely slow players on home runs and walks. CBS Sports also states that if they’d cut the action definition down to just the time when everyone on the field is running around looking for something to do, such as balls in play and runner advancement attempts, the time spent playing would actually be down to 5:47. Lacrosse requires much more athleticism than baseball, seeing as the overwhelming majority of the game is the equivalent of having a picnic with your friends.
Another reason why lacrosse is a much better sport than baseball is the fact that lacrosse requires much more teamwork, motivation and coordination. Baseball is a very individual sport. The batter has his own job, while the pitcher has another. There is no sense of coordination or teamwork. Every person does their own thing while others run around clueless. In the sport of lacrosse, players all must work together in order to score and be successful. Unlike baseball, it takes more than one person to put up points. The players must pass, and play as a team in order to beat a defense. This takes a huge amount of skill and focus. If one person does not know what they are doing, the whole team will suffer. Baseball, however, only takes one person to score which takes no coordination and planning whatsoever. It is simple to have one person stand in the dirt, swing a wooden bat, and score a few points. What is not so easy is winning a draw, passing to teammates, avoiding checks, and burying the ball in the back of the net. Another point is the fact that the real motivation for baseball players in the MLB is the multi-million dollar contracts that they are offered (LaxWorld). On the other hand, lacrosse players aren't playing with the thought of a multi-million dollar contract in mind (LaxWorld). Lacrosse players are motivated athletes who are taking the opportunity to build their skills after college, and are not thinking about their salary. It is easy to see why lacrosse players are much more skilled, coordinated, and motivated than baseball players are.
There are quite a few reasons why lacrosse is better than baseball. It is hard to be entertained for hours by a bunch of players who have no clue what is going on. Baseball is a sport made up of standing around waiting for plays to happen all by themselves, sitting in the dugout, and occasionally getting up to walk around some bases. Lacrosse is an action-packed sport that is fast-paced, interesting, and difficult to master. With almost no stoppages in play at all, lacrosse is far more entertaining, and requires quite a bit more athleticism than baseball. Baseball is boring and a complete waste of time. Baseball sucks. It’s the truth and you know it.
