Global Warming Attacks
By Adam Tripi
Humans are slowly killing this planet through producing greenhouse gasses. Humans are primarily responsible for global climate change. By releasing extreme amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) into our air it traps heat and stores it in our atmosphere. Someone might say that natural causes are responsible for the heating of our planet. Like Mount Etna in Italy, which releases between 8,000 to 30,000 metric tons of CO2 every few years. Including all of the volcanoes and other natural pollutants, they release an upwards of 319 million tones. That may seem like a lot, but it is only a fraction compare to the amount of CO2 omitted by humans, but we will get into that later. If our planet is slowly heating up, then why are we not doing anything about it?
The first piece of evidence of why human activity is primarily responsible for climate change, is because of the polar ice caps melting. This has been a well-known problem for the past 50 years and there are many facts that support it. Throughout most of the 1900s the polar ice caps have kept at a steady rate, until the late 1900s and early 2000s when factories started popping up all around the world causing temperatures to increase at a steady rate. Some people say that this just earth on its natural course but our earth has not seen such a temperature change in millions of years, and even then it was not this rapid of a change. Even if humans stop polluting, all the ice will still continue to melt because of all the pollution in the air. Ice is the brightest natural substance on earth, which is why when you walk outside on a snowy day and the sun is shining, it is really bright. Open ocean water reflects almost no light. If there is a lot of snow covering the water, then it will just reflect it back into the atmosphere, but since fossil fuels are warming the atmosphere, we are melting the snow. Since we are melting the snow, it is exposing more open water making the oceans hotter. When the oceans get hotter, it melts more ice exposing more ocean. This is called a positive feedback loop.
The second piece of evidence that supports that humans are primarily responsible for global climate change, is because of the amount of CO2 released into our atmosphere each year. There are millions of people in Japan that have to wear a mask every day or else they will be affected by the CO2 in the air. Anyone who plans on living in a major city in China like Beijing should wear a mask due to long term CO2 exposure. In just one year, humans produced over six trillion metric tons of CO2 into our atmosphere. To put that into perspective, one metric ton of CO2 condensed onto solid form is about as big as an average two story house. The empire state building would only make up 72 metric tons and all of New York City would only be a fraction of all of the CO2 released into our atmosphere. People could counter this by saying that natural pollutants like volcanoes or animals are the leading pollutants, but they are clearly not the problem. Animals do omit a surprising amount of CO2 a year, 2.8 billion tons a year but that is still just a fraction to the amount that humans produce. Volcanoes produce what may seem like a very large amount of pollution. Giant clouds of dust and ash blocking any visible ray of sunlight might sound like a lot of pollution, but in reality, it is not. Volcanoes only omit 26.8 billion tons of CO2 a year which, overall, is still a small amount. Another argument against this claim would be that we need CO2 in our atmosphere. This is in fact, correct. CO2 acts like a blanket for our planet. When the sun shines down on the earth, it reflects out back to the sun. But CO2 in the atmosphere captures the reflecting rays and traps the heat in the earth. Not enough CO2 in the atmosphere would cool the earth down into one big ice ball like a comet, but too much CO2 would trap too much heat in our earth, thus heating it up to extreme temperatures. Right now we have too much CO2 in our atmosphere. Venus is a good example of how CO2 affects a planet. Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system and not because it is 30% closer to the sun than earth, it is because of the thick clouds of CO2 that surrounds it. The average temperature of Venus is 846 degrees. Scientists predicted that Venus used to be a lot like earth with oceans and land, until thousands of volcanoes sprung up and started to produce a very immense amount of CO2 causing a giant blanket over Venus trapping any and all heat that came in.
The anthropogenic emission of fossil fuels in our atmosphere is ruining our earth. You can tell this by just looking at our air in certain parts of the world, but if looking was not enough there are a ton of facts that support this thesis. If you are one of those people who think seeing is believing and do not believe facts, well now there is physical evidence so why are we just sitting on our piles of money waiting for our world to collapse under our own pressure?
