The Death Penalty
By: Michael Feeley
The death penalty should be legal, but only in certain cases. In minor crimes, like robbery, this penalty should not be considered. In more major crimes, like murder, terrorist acts, and other deadly or serious crimes, the death penalty should be considered. Also, the use of this penalty should only be decided by a jury.
Crimes that are punishable by death are known as capital crimes or capital offences, and commonly include offences such as murder, treason, espionage, war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Ways of carrying out the death penalty include lethal gas, injection, hanging, firing squad, and electrocution. When the death penalty is used, the killing has to be quick and painless, otherwise it is just a form of torture. It should be up to the sentenced person to decide his or her method of excecution. Some people might feel that different methods, like injections, gas, or firing squad will be quicker and more painless.
Certain states in the United States have legalized the use of the death penalty, like Texas, South Carolina, Virginia, and Arizona. All states in the United States should legalize the use of this penalty, but it should be up to the ruling parties to determine when or how the death penalty is used. It should be up to the states to determine which crimes deserve the death penalty. For example, some states use the death penalty as a punishment for rape, and some use it as a punishment for murder. The death penalty should also not be considered for the first, second or even third choice. It should only be considered for the last option. If anything else could be used, like in a case for murder, if prison would not be enough, then the death penalty should come into play.
In most cases, the death penalty is used to make the world a better place by not putting dangerous people like murderers in prisons. If somehow those people got out of prison, there might be a chance that they would commit the same crime again. Last year, a man named Dylann Roof shot and killed 9 black parishioners in a church in Charleston, South Carolina. Earlier this year, he was sentenced to death.
The death penalty should be legalized, but limited in all states in the United States. How and when the penalty is administered should be up to the ruling parties of each state. However, the decision to use this penalty should be decided by a jury. The death penalty should also only be used in serious crimes, like murder. In conclusion, each state should be able to decide which crimes need, or do not need the death penalty, and for minor crimes like robbery, it should not even be considered
