Students should not have to wear school uniforms because clothing gives us the ability to express ourselves through many different ways and uniforms limit creativity. The first impression that people get is their clothes, but what impression would they get if everyone had to wear the same clothes almost every single day? We get to make our own decisions through what we wear and taking that away would not give us freedom of expression.
Clothing lets us express ourselves through different styles, colors, and patterns. During school, we should be able to express ourselves freely by our choice as an individual. An amendment of the US Constitution supports freedom of expression, “The First Amendment of the US Constitution guarantees that all individuals have the right to express themselves freely” (ProCon.org 2016). From personal experience, the school, Venice Elementary had strict rules. Venice Elementary students are required to wear a green or white logo collared shirt, khaki shorts/skirts at their fingertip length or pants, closed-toe tennis shoes, and white socks. Every Friday there is free day where they can wear anything under certain firm guidelines. At this school students do not have clothing freedom during most of the week. Schools should give students the ability to express themselves through their decision of clothes and not uniforms.
Uniforms limit creativity during schools. Uniforms do not let students express themselves and be creative with their clothing choices. This source says that, “It could be seen as stifling their creativity and independence…” (Lemouse 2017). Students with freedom of clothing have more independence and maturity than students who wear uniforms. Uniforms definitely limit creativity with students and that causes them to not have a say in what they put on their own bodies.
Students certainly should not have to wear uniforms during their school day because clothing gives us the ability to express ourselves as an individual and uniforms limit our creativity. Without uniforms, students get to make their own decisions and be independent.
