Can you imagine it being 10 million degrees outside? Well that is what it would feel like if a 15 kiloton nuclear weapon was dropped in a 0.7-mile radius from you. Nuclear weapons should be outlawed because they are dangerous and can kill millions; they destroy buildings and historic landmarks. Nuclear weapons are dangerous and can kill about 140,000 people from the blast and 80,000 people because of radiation.
Effects Nuclear Weapons Have on Humans
If a nuclear bomb was dropped, like the ones in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the fallout or radiation would kill people miles from just the bomb site. Fallout occurs from when the bomb is detonated and the lethal levels of fallout can extend for hundreds of kilometers from the blast area. The contaminated area is inhabitable for a century. Radiation from fallout can cause cancer and kill thousands of people. If cancer kills millions on a yearly basis, why do we have weapons that cause cancer?
What are the Effects on Climate?
If 100 bombs, like the ones from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, were dropped there would be 5 million tons of smoke in the atmosphere, and there would be ice age like temperatures. If countries were in nuclear war, growing seasons would be eliminated, there would be no more ozone layer, and the world precipitation would be decreased by 45%. Humanity would be decimated.
What our Government says
“The United Nations has sought to eliminate such weapons ever since its establishment” (UNDOA). Our country was in the cold war about 50 years ago with Russia. In 1962, Russia had a plan to ship nuclear weapons to Cuba and then launch them on the U.S. This caused the Cuban Missile crisis. Families all over the U.S. dug fallout shelters and bought canned food. Eventually it ended in the same year but, “The U.S. and Russia keep hundreds of missiles armed with thousands of nuclear warheads on high-alert, 24 hours a day. They can be launched with only a few minutes warning and reach their targets in less than 30 minutes” (nucleardarkness.org).
Nuclear weapons are dangerous, can cause health problems, and end humanity. The 50 kilotons nuclear weapons we have today, also known as the Tsar Bomba, should all be outlawed.
*Tsar Bomba was the Western nickname for the Soviet RDS-220 hydrogen bomb, the most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated. Its test on October 30, 1961 remains the most powerful human-made explosion in history.
