Tablets vs Textbooks in classes K-12
Many schools are considering replacing their textbooks with tablets for easier learning. Both sides of this issue has their pros and cons.
“Having textbooks in schools could be a better choice than tablets because there is no chance of the textbook running out of battery or even getting hacked.” (procon.org 2016) Even though learning from a textbook might not be as fun as on a tablet there is a better chance of finding all the information that is being searched for. Textbooks can also be inconvenient because teachers have to print out a lot of paper for handouts and assignments where tablets all of the assignments and handouts could be online.
Although tablets might be easier than textbooks because of the easy access to information and searching, there is a range of health problems that are associated with using an electrical device all day. “Some include; eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision, and dry eyes.” (procon.org 2016) Also, tablets are expensive to pay for. Research shows that tablets can be over $50 more expensive than paper textbooks. Tablets also provide many different online textbooks and homework assignments. One good thing about tablets is that it reduces the search time for looking for information because you can simply search your question. However, in a textbook it is more time consuming to flip through pages. “Unfortunately, having the opportunity of tablets may cause distractions in the classrooms” (procon.org 2016). Distractions include playing video games or being on social media. The internet might not have all the information that is needed, but it provides faster searching. Tablets should be able to be an option for different learning strategies as well as textbooks.
