There has been much question going around on rather or not college athletes should be paid. There are many of reasons that support and go against the idea of them being paid. Most college athletes have to keep up with school work and training, let alone having a job to get money. I believe that college athletes should be paid according to all the reasons that help support this thought.
Many people think college athletes should be paid because they are the ones bringing in the money and if it wasn’t for them there would be no money coming in. For example, “College athletics generate nearly $1 trillion in annual revenue for the NCAA and its member institutions, yet relatively little of that goes to the real stars of the show.” According to this, it shows that the athletes are doing the work but not getting any money. Some people might say that they get other benefits such as a scholarship, food and clothes. However, if they didn’t get payed they would have to get another job in order to buy anything that wasn’t a basic need. It would be hard to have a job with all the training and school work that comes along with college and college athletics. Another reason is that by paying athletes, in can actually keep them in school because it would encourage them to keep working hard and finish their degree. According to Joseph M. Sofio, “I believe that college athletes who appear on television should be paid out of any money received by their respective schools from the television networks. Paying college athletes would encourage athletes to stay in school longer and not leave for a professional career." On the other hand, people might say that paying the athletes would take away the fun and meaning of the game, but I think that it would promote it because they would be trying even harder knowing that they have something to work for. Lastly, every time the players go out on the field they put their physical health on the line. Some people might say that is their choice and that they know the consequences, but the players are doing because they care for the sport.
In conclusion, college athletes should be paid because they have probably been working on the sport their whole life and because they enjoy the game. Overall, college athletes should be paid because they are working really hard and doing amazing things so we can watch them do what they are good at.
