Good Fishing Spots in New York State
By: Colt Green
Are you interested in fishing? Well, I know some well-known areas for fishing around western New York and the Adirondack area. If you need a new fishing spot or want to start fishing, just read my advice about some areas in New York state about where you could cast your lure.
To start off locally, you could try Honeoye Lake. Honeoye Lake is located southwest of Ontario County, and past West Bloomfield. There are a wide variety of fish in Honeoye Lake for the size the lake is. According to the D.E.C., the fish located in Honeoye Lake are, "alewife, black crappie, bluegill, chain pickerel, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed, smallmouth bass, walleye, and yellow Perch." A decent area to fish is the south end, by the public boat launch. This area has cattails and turns more swamp-like by the south tip of the lake. Preferably, you should stay away from the south tip and edges because it gets shallow. But if you stay somewhat center of the south end, you might have better luck getting a fish. Walleye are located more center of the lake, so you may have to go more north. My perspective of Honeoye Lake is one of my top choices of fishing spots around this area. I have been to Honeoye Lake before. I had caught a good-sized crappie at the south end. Honeoye Lake has a wide variety of fish, great fishing spots, and a wide area for choosing where you would like to cast your lure.
Another excellent area for fishing is the Adirondack area. There are two lakes that are good from past experiences and reviews. Those lakes are Cranberry Lake and Lake Durant. The first lake that I will talk about is Cranberry Lake. Cranberry Lake is in western part of the Adirondacks. Cranberry Lake is found in St. Lawrence county. The species of fish in Cranberry Lake are "brook trout, smallmouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, and brown bullhead" (D.E.C). There are many different species of fish in Cranberry Lake. "A northern pike measuring 45 inches have been caught in recent years" (D. E.C). Cranberry Lake has a wide variety of fish and their size are tremendously big. The next lake is Lake Durant. Lake Durant is found in Hamilton county. Lake Durant is past Old Forge, and east of Blue Mountain Lake. Lake Durant is in the north central part of the Adirondacks. There is a lot of seaweed on the bottom of the lake. If you look out your boat you can see the lily pads and seaweed at the bottom. In other words, the lake is very vegetated. According the D.E.C, The Best time to go fishing is the early morning and the early afternoon. If you are interested in catching Tiger Muskellunge, the best place to fish are along the weed lines. Or if you are interested in fishing for largemouth bass, you should fish the shallow, weedy, or stumpy, (wood and rocks) areas. The fish known to be found in Lake Durant are, "largemouth bass, tiger muskellunge, brown bullhead, yellow perch, and pumpkinseed" (D.E.C). Again this lake has many different types of fish. I have had experience fishing at Lake Durant. I believe the most common fish is the largemouth bass. This is probably because of how
much vegetation there is. My dad had caught four bass including, three smallmouth and one largemouth over a period of three days. Lake Durant is also known for ice fishing. People have caught big fish including tiger muskellunge. If you ever get a chance to travel up to the Adirondacks, Lake Durant is one of the best lakes to fish. These are only two lakes that I listed for fishing in the Adirondacks. There are many more amazing lakes to fish, but these two lakes, I have been to before and they have great fishing environments.
The final area for fishing is Sodus Bay. Sodus Bay is in Wayne County. The Bay is right under Lake Ontario. It is located right about at the inside corner of New York state, right near the St. Lawrence River. "From 1989 to 1993, Sodus Bay was annually stocked with fingerling walleyes raised from fry by cooperating angler associations, and from 1996 to 2000, it was annually stocked with fingerling walleyes. Since 2003, the stocking policy calls for biannual plantings of fingerling walleyes." (D. E. C). The maximum depth is 48 feet. The bay shoreline is shallow with a lot of vegetation. The vegetation covers 37 percent of the bay’s surface. The fish found in Sodus Bay area are, "longnose gar, bowfin, northern pike, chain pickerel, channel catfish, brown bullhead, white perch, rock bass, pumpkinseed, bluegill, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, black crappie, walleye, and yellow perch." These are a lot of fish in such a small bay. I have not been to Sodus Bay yet, but I have heard that the fishing there is very good. I would like to try fishing there sometime.
These are only four of the many areas of where you could fish in New York state. If you ever want to try fishing or try a new fishing spot, why not try one of my areas. If you have not tried fishing before I recommend it, because there is nothing better than being out on the water for fun and relaxation. And if you are lucky you may even catch one.
