Is College Worth It?
By: Molly Russell
Students with stacks of college applications often find themselves asking, is college worth it? Yes, college is worth it, but the answer to that question isn’t that simple.
More and more jobs in today’s work place require a college degree. For example, at Honeoye Falls-Lima School District, before someone can apply for a teaching job, they need a college transcript. John Russell, an electrical engineer at Harris Corporation interviews applicants. Russell experiences the interview process first hand, and states “for most job openings people aren’t even considered for an interview if they don’t have a college degree.” (Russell) In an interview with John Russell he states “College is the key to open the door.” Going to college gives you more opportunities, and helps you learn new things. Also, overall college graduates make more money. College graduates make more money because they are highly skilled and better prepared than their high school graduate peers. Not only does college help you learn new things, but it exposes students to new experiences and new people with different backgrounds. College Data online states, at The University of Rochester, 17.4% of the student body is from one of 113 countries. Imagine how many new cultures and backgrounds these students are exposed too.
It is very beneficial to attend college, but many students are reluctant about college because it is so costly. Many students have to take out loans because they cannot afford college. If the graduate has an excellent job, that he or she enjoys, the hard work will be worth it. Plus, the graduate will be able to pay off the loans, since they have a medium to high salary job.
Although college can be overwhelming and costly, the benefits of college outweigh the difficulties.
