From limits to what kinds of guns you can own, to what attachments you can put on them, gun control is stricter than ever. The kinds of restrictions that the government has put on guns is ridiculous, and what’s even worse is that law enforcement doesn’t even have to abide to these laws. From pistols to assault rifles, it is becoming harder and harder to own a gun.
Pistols are one of the best types of guns for the portability, and size of them. They are small enough to carry on the waste for protection, yet powerful enough to actually do something in an emergency. Nobody wants to carry around a big rifle everywhere they go. The biggest complaint with getting a pistol is you have to have a pistol permit. The Monroe County Government says, "You may apply for a pistol permit if you have been a resident of Monroe County for at least six months at the time of application. Under New York State Law, you must be 21 years of age to be issued a pistol permit and to purchase a pistol. You are not required to buy or own a firearm at the time of application and your permit will not expire even if you never place a firearm on it." The process can take up to two years, and since you have to be 21 to apply for one. This means that typically you can't get a pistol until you are 23! Not only are pistols good for self-defense, but they are good for hunting as well. It doesn’t make sense why a 12-year-old can legally shoot a rifle whose bullets can travel for miles, yet that same person can’t shoot a low powered pistols that won’t shoot nearly as far. Pistols should be accessible to anyone who can buy any other gun, and there should not even be a permit at all.
With pistol restrictions being so bad already, it is hard to believe that it gets worse than that. But it does, with assault rifles. According to the NRA-ILA, “It shall be unlawful to possess any “assault weapon” or “large capacity ammunition feeding device” except as permitted by the law. Residents of New York who lawfully owned an "assault weapon," as defined, prior to January 15, 2013 were required to either sell it or register it with the State Police before April 15, 2014. NY Penal Law § 400.00(16-a). Registration information includes the registrant's name, date of birth, gender, race, residential address, social security number and a description of each weapon being registered.” This means that even if you had an assault rifle legally, then you have to sell it, or register it with state police, and if this is not completed then there is a $400 fine that is given to you.
There is another side to this though, and it is that some types of weapons are more dangerous than others. For example, getting a pistol into anywhere is much easier than getting a rifle in. Also, assault rifles shoot at a much faster rate than other guns do, so it allows the shooter to do more damage in a short amount of time. However, if someone wanted to do harm with a weapon, then they will do so with or without certain laws. All the laws do are take away the privileges of the responsible people who just want to use them for recreational use, or even self-defense. Most gun regulations should be taken away, and life would be much better for many people around the country.
