Is College Education Important?
By: Maggie Adams
A college education is a necessity in today’s world. College is a very important part of one’s educational path and their future. With a college education, you can have a better future, and an occupation with higher importance which will eventually lead to more income. Also, you set a good example for your children and others. Going to college leads to a higher quality of life.
Quality of Life
If you would like to live a longer, more successful life, then going to college will definitely help. Studies show that compared to high school graduates, college graduates have longer life spans, better access to health care, better dietary and health practices, greater economic stability and security, more prestigious employment, and greater job satisfaction. They also have less dependency on government assistance, greater knowledge of government, less criminal activity, much more community service, and good leadership skills. These are qualities that will help you build a better future.
John G. Ramsey a professor at the Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching, said that the credentials you gain with a college education “are about setting yourself apart, being employable, becoming a legitimate candidate for a job with a future:” (Opposing Viewpoints 2003) Ramsay also said “…high school graduates that do not go on to college can be painful reminders of a string of misfortunes: poor advice, money problems, bad decisions, and wasted time” (Opposing Viewpoints 2003).
A Legacy for Your Children
A college education will benefit your children. Having parent that had a college education inspires children to attend college too. Research shows that children of college educated parents are healthier, perform better academically, and are more likely to attend college themselves than children of those with lower educational inspiration.
Effects on Society
College education is important. If students decide to stop their education after they graduate high school, it will poorly affect their future. The nation’s education affects society. Without a college education, people are not likely to run a job of high importance. Speaking at a symposium on American values, Anne L. Heald said there is “an extraordinary consensus that the preparation of young people for work is one of the singular most important things a society can do to improve its ability to prosper in a new international economy” (Opposing Viewpoints 2003).
Similarly, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan said “Without college, you may be left out. And the relationship between a college education and success will become more and more significant in our information-driven global economy. Higher education will be increasingly important for landing high-paying jobs” (Opposing Viewpoints 2003).
College education is important because it leads you to successful careers and higher education prepares you to make the transition to new fields. If you want a successful, healthy, and happy future, then college is the right path to take.
