New York City has a population of about 8 million people. Honeoye falls, a small town in upstate New York, has a population of 2,713. There are some large differences between these two areas, including what kind of businesses there are. Large chain restaurants do not belong in small towns because it can affect the sales of locally owned businesses, the mood of the town, and larger restaurants generally have food that is not the best for your health.
What about the locals?
The first reason chains do not belong in small towns is because it could affect locally owned businesses. For example, Dunkin’ Donuts is a very large company with establishments all over the country, or even the world. If one of their cafes shut down it would not have a major effect. “I think the cottage competing with Dunking Donuts would not be good for the business. But I also think everyone in the area would be much more upset if the cottage closed down because it’s a special place.” (An employee of a locally owned business, The Cottage Hotel, and a Dunkin Donut’s comparing the two places.) On the other hand, locally owned businesses face more of a struggle to stay in business. If there are big chain restaurants competing with small places, the small places may go out of business.
The Atmosphere
Chain restaurants do not belong in small towns because they may affect the mood of the place. Small towns, like Honeoye Falls have a lot of history that people are proud of. There’s old taverns and restaurants they would go to when they were children. “The Cottage has such a happy laid back environment that belongs in a town like this, Dunkin doesn’t give me the same feeling.” There are people who have lived there forever. But when their town starts changing around them they might feel like their way of life is going away. When you look into Honeoye Falls, you see a cute rustic like old village. A Dunkin’ Donuts has no place in a place like that.
What about your Health?
Chains should not be in small towns because they tend to be much worse for you than local restaurants. There are many farmers who live near and around Honeoye Falls. This gives businesses a chance to use fresh organic food. The Cottage Hotel of Mendon for instance, has a large variety of all natural and organic locally grown foods. “The Cottage is way healthier for you, and everyone grows up eating the things close to them so I think less and less people want junk food when they have grown up with great opportunities to eat healthy. ” What does Dunkin’ Donuts have? “It’s all prepackaged crap.” (Dunkin employee) If children are raised so closely to the junk food places, they’ll grow up eating it all the time, which is not healthy.
The Summary
Chains do not belong in small towns because they could ruin local businesses, change the feeling of the town, and because they are unhealthy. Wouldn’t you love for your children to grow up with a sense of small town- magic? Ditch the chains!
