Keeping Art Classes In School
By: Sophia Patchett
Many schools are cutting art classes out of their programs. These schools don’t understand why we need art classes. Art classes help students learn special skills, and these classes help keep some of our needs in the world.
"The arts help develop social skills, problem solving, decision making skills, and other learning skills..."(School Art Programs: Should They Be Saved, 2016). Students taking art classes at a young age learn very important aspects, like shapes and colors. It’s hard to learn special skills without a program in your school that can help teach you those life skills. It’s sad to think about schools that can’t offer any art classes due to budget cuts. “But, some schools don’t offer any art classes because they have budget cuts. A number of schools offering visual arts programs dropped to 83 percent in 2009-10. In 2013, public schools in major cities, including Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC, are still struggling with budget cuts, resulting in the continued elimination of art programs across affected school districts. Due to budget constraints, fewer schools offer art classes today than a decade ago” (School Art Programs: Should They Be Saved, 2016). Many older students taking art classes are learning skills like being social or making decisions/problem solving.
Art classes help students express themselves and boosts creativity. Art classes help kids be more confident with their work and it gives them a chance to be creative. Without art classes kids would have difficulties being different or maybe expressing their selves and art is a great way to show what you're feeling. Students having trouble, can express themselves through a piece of art and show that they are capable.
If you think about it, art is everywhere! It’s clothes, technology, movies, books, buildings, and pictures. Almost everything is art. Most schools have to cut art classes because of budgets or because of jobs relating to art don’t make enough money. Leading to kids not learning about the jobs that affect our everyday lives. Luckily there are schools that can help teach our generations these important aspects of our lives and how we need artists in the world.
Many schools say you have to take at least one art program to graduate and this could lower their chances of getting into a good college if their school does not offer any art classes. Even though some schools have cut out their art programs, many students have probably found a way to fit art into their daily schedule out of school. Schools should find a way to save their art program! If the cut of art courses is due to core classes or budget cuts they should find a way to convince them that the art classes are educational and important to students and that they could have a fundraiser.
