Cars are an absolutely awful form of transportation. Whatever happened to the good old days of the Wild West when people would ride horses? The only other side of this topic is that horses would be a little slower. So what? It is about the journey anyways, and other than that, horses are wonderful sources of transportation. These great mammals are eco-friendly, smart, trainable companions, and do not need constant steering. All of these qualities are what people have been looking for in cars for a while now, so why the heck have we not changed back to the good ole way of transportation?
Horses are extremely eco-friendly forms of transportation that not only stay neutral in the environment, but actually help it. First of all, horses do not pollute the air with gases that are harmful to the environment, such as the current build up of carbon dioxide, which is a main waste product of cars. Trust me, I know what you are thinking right now, but horse farts do not count as “dangerous gases” that are “harmful to the environment.” According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, “Nearly one half of all Americans- an estimated 150 million- live in areas that don’t meet federal air quality standards. Passenger vehicles and heavy-duty trucks are the main sources of this pollution, which includes ozone, particulate matter, and other smog-forming emissions.” If these cars were gone, the atmosphere would be so much healthier and people would still have good sources of transportation. Also, horses do not need harmful fossil fuels that help account for pollution and horses only need cheaper sources of energy, which would be food and water. Both of these sources can generally be accessed easily, and the horse can go for over 15 miles at a trot without extraordinary strain, according to the website, www.luckypony.com. This distance traveled may be less than a car, but the horse can be refueled easily and quickly to get back going. Also horses might poop, but the horse’s poop can be used as a fertilizer that could be used by farmers to grow plants and crops, which would help the environment.
Horses also do not need constant steering, which is on the contrary to cars. For some phone addicts, out there people could text and play games longer than they could if they were driving a car, because horses have some minds of their own and are logical enough that they will try not to run into each other or hit a tree or deer, all of which are common obstacles for cars. Eventually, maybe horses could even learn how to get home from where they are and their owner could say a simple word like “Home” and the horse would get going with the owner not worrying about anything because their horse knows where to go. The horse would therefore end up acting like a personal taxi for its owners. Going along with this reason, if someone is drunk, they would not have to end up drunk driving, and would just be able to get on their horse and go home. If the drunk person tries to steer the horse into obstacles, the horse would also obviously avoid them because it is a smart animal that would hopefully not run into a tree if that was where it was sent to go, unlike dumb cars. This would lower the rate of accidents and people would not have to worry as much about getting drunk and not getting home.
Horses are also smart and trainable companions. Horses would not only be forms of transportation, but horses could be pets for their owners. Pets can lower depression, so horses would help the depressed or lonely people. According to the WebMD, “Depression can isolate you. It can make you pull back from your friends and loved ones. If you have a pet, you're never alone. That can really make a difference.” Also, the WebMD states that “Having a pet can gently push you to get more social contact. You might chat with others while walking your dog at the park or waiting at the vet. Pets are natural icebreakers, and other pet owners love to talk about their animals.” These reasons show that a horse can help a person be happy throughout all of their life. The horse can also grow to care about its owner and hopefully itself too, because if an owner decided they wanted to reenact a scene from The Fast and the Furious except with their horse, the horse would not try to do crazy flips and crash into things on purpose. Also, as seen in the third paragraph, horses can be trained to do things like recognize where they are and know how to get home just through a simple command.
Many people are too oblivious to recognize how much better horses are as transportation than any other motor vehicles. Some things were better in the old way, and horses as transportation are one of those better things. Someday, the time of horses and the Wild West will come back again and create a much better society than today’s society as a result.
