Why marijuana should be legalized in the US.
There are many reasons why marijuana should be legalized in the United States. Some reasons include that it helps muscle spasms, nausea from cancer chemotherapy, weight loss from HIV or nerve pain, seizure disorders and Crohns Disease. In 2015, 39,513 people were diagnosed with HIV infection in the United States. Many people suffered from weight loss. When you are fighting a disease or illness you want to feel healthy and get rid of nausea might help you feel better. More reasons why marijuana should be legalized is that it is said to help your natural chemicals in your body work better. Legalizing marijuana can be a revenue generating resource for states in sales and taxes. Also, police could focus their time and effort fighting more serious and more violent crime. “The only thing that offers any relief is marijuana, They’re talking about kids who have grand mal seizures, and they’ve discovered that marijuana eases that down to where these children can have a life, that right there, to me, says, ‘Legalize it across the board!’” (Freeman July 16 2012). Morgan Freeman believes that without medical marijuana, people cannot feel relief and that medical marijuana helps them.
States that have legalized medical marijuana.
Although there is no specific part of the US that is pro or against legalizing marijuana, most of the central and west coast states seem to be favoring legalization. Currently there are 23 states that legalized medical marijuana, but there are laws that you cannot use medical marijuana just to get high. You have to have a prescription for it.
Why marijuana should not be legalized in the United States.
There are many reasons why medical marijuana should not be legalized. A couple reasons include that the drug can become addicting. This can lead to long term health problems. Also, marijuana is considered a “gateway” drug, which means users tend to progress to other more serious drugs like heroin. There are also side effects of medical marijuana. Some include anxiety, short term memory loss and psychosis. According to research, that in the year 2030 the cancer rate of cases will be 24 million. Also, some long term and very serious effects include brain cell loss, mood change, higher risk of lung infection, cancer, a daily cough, and pregnancy problems. Many of these medical issues are very serious and can result in death. Most of the side effects impact your brain or your respiratory system, which is very vital to your body. “People talk about medical marijuana. And you know, you hear that story that people who are sick need medical marijuana. But marijuana is the entry drug for people trying to get kids hooked on drugs. I don't want medical marijuana; there are synthetic forms of marijuana that are available for people who need it for prescription. Don't open the doorway to medicinal marijuana.” (Romney July 25, 2007). Mitt Romney is against legalizing medical marijuana for the reason that he believes that some people might use medical marijuana the wrong way.
